New York Times goes Open Source

Wow! The New York Times newspaper has opened its open source blog and released their two internal tools (DBSlayer, XSL Cache) as Open Source projects.

[Edit] And already the spambots are harvesting their sites…

Apache behind load balancer or proxy and sensible log files

Friday, October 19th, 2007

In case you happen to use Apache web server behind a load balancer or proxy, then almost certainly you want to have sensible IP-addresses in the log files..
This is where mod_rpaf comes into play. mod_rpaf changes the remote address of the client to the one specified by the proxy with the X-Forwarded-For header. Installation on Gentoo is quite easy, although this module is not in the portage (yet). Just get the ebuild and required configuration file from my ebuild request, add it to your overlay, emerge it, add -D RPAF to Apache’s startup settings and configure the RPAFproxy_ips setting for your server. Also set your load balancer/proxy to emit X-Forwarded-For header. Done. ;)

Today until Sunday I will take part in Estonian Young Physicists Autumn event in Kääriku, Estonia… I hope it will be fun.. ;)
